I really love seeing the amazing photos from this photography competition. There were so many great winning entries. One of my favourites this year would have to be this one, titled Family Tree.

Alphabet Photography

If you haven't heard of the Alphabet Photography site yet, you can check it out here.

Photographer Jennifer Blakely took photos of everyday objects that look like letters of the alphabet, which can then be rearranged to form words. You get to play with what your words would look like by changing the individual letters till you are happy with it.

It's soo cool! I will definitely be ordering some for presents!

Photos of a Sun Pillar

Scott sent me these amazing photos today of a sun pillar. I had never heard of them before so was totally blown out by them. The sun pillars are those whitish looking arcs/lines in the sky. Scott assures me it is way cooler to see the real thing than look at a photo of them.

For those of us who didn't know about them here are a couple of definitions I pulled up from the web -

sun pillar [′sən ‚pil·ər]
(meteorology)
A luminous streak of light, white or slightly reddened, extending above and below the sun, most frequently observed near sunrise or sunset; it may extend to about 20° above the sun, and generally ends in a point. Also known as light pillar.

sun pillar

–noun Astronomy.
a halo phenomenon in which a vertical streak of light appears above and below the sun, believed to be caused by the reflection of sunlight by ice crystals with vertical axes.

Check this out - there is one face in the water and another bigger face in the rock work to the right of the water - pretty incredible huh?

My Pic of the Day from Scott

Lately Scott has been sending me a pic of the day - a pressie from him to me. This was today's pic - I love the softness and redness of the rose in stark contrast to the hard, washed out look of the wooden planks.

National Geographic 2009 Best Wild Animals Pics

National Geographic's 2009 Best Wild Animal Pictures have been announced this week. They run an international competition every year with thousands of entries being submitted. It boggles the mind how they can narrow all those entries down to so few. Glad I don't have that job!

Here is the link for those interested -

This would be my favourite out of the final selection - titled "Respect" from Igor Shpilenok

Winner: Urban and Garden Wildlife
"Respect"

Pet cat Ryska showed who's boss despite being outsized by several red foxes that came snooping around photographer Igor Shpilenok's ranger cabin in Russia's far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula. Her defiance helped win Shpilenok a Wildlife Photographer of the Year honor in London on October 22, 2009.

She soon earned respect from them--and from me--living up to her name, which means 'little lynx' in Russian, said Shpilenok, who took Ryska along for company during his five-month stay in the vast Kronotsky Nature Reserve.

"Some photographers have the luck to be at the right place at the right time," commented competition judge and photographer Jan-Peter Lahall. "You don't play around with an angry cat, even if you are a big fox."
